Detailed information

Product detailed description

FUGU is a tactical card game for 1 to 4 players that perfectly balances push-your-luck mechanics with smart hand management. Each player starts with a hidden row of 18 face-down cards. Your goal is to systematically replace them with new cards from the center pool to build the ultimate reef.

However, the local sea dwellers are quite picky about their neighbors:

  • Ascending Order: If you place a card number-side up, it must strictly follow an ascending order from left (lowest) to right (highest).

  • The Anchor Rescue: Does the number not fit your row? Rotate the card 180° and place it anchor-side up. Anchors can ignore the ascending order and be placed anywhere, but beware—they will cost you heavy penalty points at the end of the game!

  • Unique Scoring Preferences: Every creature scores differently. Bannerfish love to gather in large schools, pufferfish demand absolute privacy and dislike being next to other fish, octopuses want to hide safely between two corals, and corals score best when collected in colorful sets (pink, green, and yellow).

The player with the most points wins. With its beautiful marine illustrations, compact size, and engaging gameplay, FUGU is a perfect catch for family game nights as well as seasoned gamers looking for a clever filler.

FUGU – FAQ

How should I arrange the cards in my row?
The illustrations in the rulebook show overlapping cards for layout reasons only, allowing the examples to fit on the page. During actual play, you should avoid overlapping your cards (or overlap them as little as possible) so you can handle them easily and insert or remove cards without disturbing the order. Whenever table space allows, it is best to place all 18 of your cards side-by-side. You can also arrange them in a slight arc so you don't interfere with other players' rows.

Do I have to place a card number-side up if it fits in my ascending order?
No, you can also ignore the ascending order and flip the card 180° to place it anchor-side up. But each anchor also scores minus points.

Can I place the card from the middle wherever I want?
No. You must swap the card you took from the middle with one face-down card from your row, following the general rules (increasing order, number or anchor-side up).

If I don't want a card from the middle, can I also just flip one of my face-down cards?
No, you always have to take a card from the middle. If you don't want to take a card, your only other option is to pass and end your game. If you pass, you will take no further turns. Other players continue until the last player passed or has no more face-down cards.

If I place a card anchor-side up, are the creatures on these cards still scored in the end?
Yes, ALL the creatures (both anchor-side up and number-side up cards) are evaluated for your points. But each anchor also scores minus points.

Can I split/gather bannerfish groups as I wish? For example: can I consider one group of 2 bannerfish and another group of 3 bannerfish as being a group of 5 bannerfish in total and score 9 points?
No. A group must never be interrupted. In your example, you would score 2 points for the group of 2 and 5 points for the group of 3. That adds up to 7 points in total.

I have 4 anchors. Are they worth 4 minus points?
No, they are worth -10 points. The first anchor is worth -1 points, the second anchor -2 points, the third anchor -3 points and the forth anchor -4 points. So they add up to $-1 + -2 + -3 + -4 = -10$ points.

I have 4 pink corals, 1 green and 1 yellow coral. Is this 2 sets?
No, one set has to consist of three DIFFERENT corals. So you have one set (1 pink + 1 green + 1 yellow coral) that scores 3 points.

How do I play while holding my cards in hand instead of laying them on the table, as a note in the rules tells? (Once you are more experienced, or when travelling, you may hold your cards as a small face-down deck in one hand.)

In this mode, you do not lay your 18 cards on the table. Instead, you hold them as a small face-down deck in one hand. You can flip through the deck one card at a time to check the face up and face down cards inside it, without changing the order and without shuffling (much like flipping through a stack of trading cards to check what's inside). On your turn, you may replace a face down card from the deck with a new one from the center, following the normal rules.

(Note: while playing this way, we suggest to first take a card in the center, then place it on top of/under the face down card you want to replace, and then extract that face down card and flip it in the center).

Remember that all other rules still apply (always keeping the sequence intact as an ascending order — this time from left to right —, number-side or anchor-side up, etc.).
